For 93-year-old Anna Don, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI-UA) at the University of Arizona has been more than a program—it's been a lifeline. Originally joining OLLI-UA for connection and education after the loss of her spouse, Anna has found the program to be a transformative part of her life. Over the last six months, she has attended courses online daily while recovering from health issues. “It was OLLI that really saved my life because I couldn’t do anything [physically]. I could still get online and learn something,” Anna said.

OLLI-UA offers intellectually stimulating, non-credit courses and vibrant social opportunities for adults aged 50 and better, embodying the University of Arizona’s mission to transcend traditional barriers to education. The program is part of the university’s Continuing and Professional Education unit under the Outreach, Distance, and Continuing Education (ODCE) division. “Anna’s story is a testament to the power of lifelong learning,” said Rebecca Cook, Senior Director of Continuing and Professional Education. “Our goal is to provide meaningful learning experiences that enrich lives, and Anna’s journey highlights just how impactful those experiences can be.”

Since joining OLLI-UA, Anna has explored a variety of subjects, from the arts to science, and formed meaningful relationships with fellow participants. “I’ve met so many wonderful people and learned so much,” she shared. Beyond the personal growth and intellectual engagement, OLLI-UA has become a community of support and inspiration for Anna and countless others.

“Programs like OLLI-UA are designed to foster curiosity and connection,” explained Scott Aldridge, Program Manager for OLLI-UA. “We are deeply committed to creating spaces where adults can thrive intellectually and socially. Anna’s experience underscores the vital role we play in promoting a sense of purpose and belonging.”

OLLI-UA’s offerings align with ODCE’s broader mission to provide access to education that transcends geography, cost, and age. The division’s Lifelong Learning Loop initiative connects learners at every stage of their journey, from pre-college to advanced professional education and beyond. “Lifelong learning isn’t just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about fostering a sense of growth and connection throughout life,” added Cook.

As Anna continues to recover, she remains an active participant in OLLI-UA’s programs, embracing every opportunity to learn and connect. “It’s been an amazing experience for me,” Anna said. Her story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of lifelong learning and the University of Arizona’s commitment to supporting learners of all ages and stages.
